Aribam Syam Sharma, the chairman of jury for Indian Panorama section of IFFI 2015 and a veteran film maker from Manipur? has said that we in India broadly lack a film watching culture.

Talking to media in the backdrop of ongoing IFFI, he said that most of the people here go to watch the movies for the sake of entertainment and more often than not their emphasis is not on good quality cinema.

As most of the good cinema exists in non feature films and not only in so called cinema, he said.

He also objected to the idea of calling the non Hindi films a regional cinema.
He said that to the foreign countries films made in Tamil, Bengali, Hindi or Bodo languages are from India and not regional films of India.

He emphasised the need to show good cinema made in every language of India with governmental assistance and media support so that people have a real taste for good cinema.

Mr Makrand Brahme, jury member for non feature film section said that 'Breaking Free' is a non feature film which took seven long years to complete but despite being a very good movie it can not compete with so called mainstream Hindi cinema.

Ms Bijoy Jena, the jury member, also asked for governmental support to promote good quality cinema which often are made by lesser known film makers with small budgets.

AIR correspondent reports that detailing about the efforts in choosing the right films for Indian Panorama category, Mr Aribam Syam Sharma said that the jury members did not go regional balance but for good cinema only.

When asked why are non feature films made when there are no spectators for those, Sharma said that we are creators therefore we should sing, dance and paint- not for others only, but also for the purpose that we can sing dance and paint. For being human is akin of being creative, he quipped.
