WB: JU VC blames fringe elements for raising anti-national slogans

In Kolkata, Vice-Chancellor of Jadavpur University, JU, Prof. Surnajan Das today condemned the anti-national slogans at a protest march organised by a section of the University students last evening. <br/><br/>The rally was not officially convened by the students union, he said and added that he has asked for a report and action will be taken against the people involved in the incident.<br/><br/>Meanwhile, some posters depicting the same slogans were spotted at the University premises today.<br/>Talking to media-persons, Prof. Das said that a move seems to be on to defame and denigrate the entire university by some fringe anti-national elements. He said that some intruders were reportedly spotted in the rally and the matter is being looked into.<br/><br/>The Vice-Chancellor said that Jadavpur University has a history of maintaining freedom of expression and right to dissent and he will not run the University with the help of Police.<br/><br/>Slogans supporting Afzal Guru and Geelani and demanding freedom for Manipur and Kashmir were shouted during the protest march that was organized demanding immediate release of the JNUSU president Kanhaiya Kumar and to extend solidarity towards the ongoing movement in JNU. <br/><br/>The student activists who organized the march later issued a press release last night clarifying that they do not approve the slogans raised by some "fringe elements" who walked with the procession. <br/><br/>The statement issued by Saunak Mukherjee, Saikat Shit and Priyosmita also condemned the media's alleged approach to depict the entire protest march as an exercise of supporting Afzal Guru's cause.<br/><br/>SFI, the Left students' wing, in a release said that they did not organise the JU march on Tuesday
