WB Govt orders inquiry into deadliest maoist attack

West Bengal Government today ordered an inquiry into the deadliest Maoist attack in West Midnapore district that killed 24 jawans.

The state Home Secretary Ardhendu Sen told reporters after a high level review meeting in Kolkata that action will be taken against senior officers if they were found wanting. He will conduct the probe and the terms of reference of the inquiry would be decided soon.

Mr Sen said, it is not a clear case of intelligence failure as there was intelligence report that the Maoists were assembling in the area. But there was no specific information that they may attack the security camp. Admitting some lapse, he said, it had taken time for the intelligence inputs to percolate down to the lower level.

Asked if Maoist leader Kishenji had escaped to Jharkhand, Mr Sen said that he is very much in Bengal and the forces are after him. Refuting the allegation that the EFR did not have proper training to combat the Maoists, he said, they are a highly motivated, disciplined and well-trained force.

He said, further steps had been taken for the fortification of camps of security forces in the Maoist-hit areas in the state.
