WB govt declassifies Netaji files, asks Centre to follow the move

The West Bengal Government today declassified 64 files pertaining to the last days of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose, one of the foremost freedom fighters of India. The Kolkata Police Chief Surojit Kar Purakayasto at a ceremony at the Kolkata Police Museum released the files, which trace the history of Netaji's life between 1937 and 1947, into the public domain this morning.<br/><br/>The 12,744 pages of the 64 files have been digitised in the form of compact discs (CDs). The original files will be kept at the Kolkata Police Museum and will be open for public viewing from next Monday. The Kolkata Police Chief gave the first copies of digitised files away to the close family members and kins of Netaji. AIR correspondent reports that the representatives of different media houses were also given a copy of the digitised files.<br/><br/>West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has said that the Centre should also make public its files on Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Chief Minister Banerjee visited the police museum where 64 files relating to Netaji are being displayed in glass cascades. The Chief Minister tweeted, her government has made all Netaji files public.<br/><br/>She said, people have a right to know about the brave son of India. Ms Banerjee said, in 70 years his mysterious disappearance has not been solved and the central government should also declassify the files on Netaji.<br/><br/>Welcoming the declassification of the 64 files by the state government, Chandra Bose, Netaji's grandnephew termed it a correct step and said, now it is the duty of the central government to declassify 130 files it has with it. <br/><br/><br/>The Congress has demanded the Centre to declassify the files relating to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Briefing the reporters in New Delhi this evening, party spokesperson Shakeel Ahmed said, truth will come out if the Centre will disclafy the files. Mr Ahmed welcomed the decision of the West Bengal government of declassification of the files today. He said it will help in preventing selective leaks and rumour. <br/><br/>The BJP today said, the Centre is concerned about the files related to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. Reacting on the issue of declassification of 64 files on Netaji by West Bengal Government, party spokesperson M J Akbar told AIR that Prime Minister Narendra Modi have met twice the family members of Subhas Chandra Bose in this regard. He said, a committee has been formed to examine the whole complexity of the issue. Mr Akbar also said, whatever decision will be taken by the Prime Minister following the submission of reports will be in the interest of nation.
