WB Govt agrees to give more autonomy to hill people

The West Bengal Government has reached an agreement with Gorkha Janmukti Morcha to settle Darjeeling crisis giving more autonomy to hill people. Announcing this in Kolkata this afternoon, the Chief Minister Mamta Banerjee said that an agreement was signed between the West Bengal Government and Gorkha Janmukti Morcha after two day's Secretary Level talks. Describing the day as a historic one, Ms.Banerjee said that she would urge the Center to convene tri-partite level meeting within a week to endorse the Secretary level agreement. The Chief Minister appraised the development to the Union Home Minister Mr.P Chidambaram. Later speaking to newsmen, the State Chief Secretary Mr.Samar Ghosh told that a new autonomous body will be set up in Darjeeling. A bill to this effect will be placed in the next session of the state assembly. The body will be formed through election in the hills. Referring to the demands of the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha to include more areas in dooars and tarai regions, the Chief Secretary said that a high power committee will be set up to look into it. The Secretary level meeting also decided to set up a Board of Administrators to start developmental work in Darjeeling until new autonomous body is formed.
