In West Bengal, campaigning for the Ist phase of assembly elections ended this afternoon. The Ist phase of elections will take place in 54 seats covering six North Bengal districts on next Monday. State chief electoral officer Sunil Gupta said in Kolkata today that preparations for conducting election are nearly over. Poll workers at 16 remote places in Darjeeling districts left for their destinations today. AIR Kolkata correspondent Arijit Chakroborty reports that strong security measures are in place to ensure free and fair voting. Central paramilitary forces have started area domination at different places. Inter state and international borders along North Bengal will be sealed from tomorrow to prevent the entry of unwanted person. Over 97 lakh 62 thousand voters will decide the fate of 364 candidates. 28 general observers, 9 expenditure and three police observers are monitoring the situation. Opinion polls have been banned throughout the state for next 48 hours.
