In Kerala, the water level of the Mullapperiyar dam in Idukki has further increased and reached the maximum permissible level of 136 feet. Four low intensity tremors, one of them measuring 3.2 on Richter scale on saturday has further raised the safety concern of the 116 year old dam built with ancient technology. Meanwhile, a high level delegation including state water resources and revenue ministers will be reaching Delhi on Monday to seek further central assistance. Kerala is demanding reduction in water level of the dam to 120 feet on war footing. The state is prepared to build a new dam shouldering the entire cost. The Prime Minister has already made it clear that the Centre will intervene to tackle the Mullapperiyar dam between Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Situated in Kerala, Mullapperiyar dam belongs to Tamil Nadu as per a pre-independence lease signed by the then princely state.
