In Kerala, the water level of 116 year old mullapperiyar dam in Idukki district has gone up further to 136.6 feet. Heavy rain in the catchment area of the dam and limited outflow to Tamil Nadu has increased the water level. More leakage at the top most 16 feet of the dam has added another dimension to the safety of the dam.Kerala assembly speaker G Karthikeyan visited the dam today. Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy has reached Delhi to seek immediate central assistance to reduce the water level to 120 feet and permission for a new dam. In a letter to his Tamil Nadu counterpart, Chandy urged Jayalaitha to adopt a humanitarian approach for safety of thirty lakh people in Kerala. He assured sustained supply of water to Tamil Nadu. Three MLAs, Bijimol, Roshi Augustine and S Rajendran are on hunger strike in Idukki on the issue. Even as mass agitation continues, leaders of Kerala urged Tamil Nadu to sort out the issue amicably. An emergency session of Kerala assembly will be convened on 9th of this month on the issue.Meanwhile, CPI(M) polit Bureau has called both Kerala and Tamilnadu to adopt an attitude which will help to resolve complex and long standing Mullaperiyar dam issue. The Party has sought central intervention for resolving the problem. In a press statement the party called for immediate measures to ensure safety of people living around the dam. This, the party said, needs to be done in consultation with the concerned state governments. The party said that the water supply to Tamilnadu from this dam should also be assured in future.
