The water crisis at NTPC power plant at Farakka in West Bengal has forced the authorities of the 2100 MW plant to shut all the six units, an official informed AIR this evening. Power supply to Sikkim, Odisha, Bihar and Jharkhand from the plant has been stopped due to none-production. Shortage of electricity in Bengal is also feared but the state authorities in Kolkata said alternate arrangements have been made. Farakka township is also facing acute shortage of drinking water, the sources informed.

Five of the six units at the plant were closed down due to the acute water scarcity since Friday night and the last unit producing 500MW had to be closed down later on. The scarcity has been created due to none-availability of enough water, reaching from Ganga, in the Farakka feeder canal. The water-levels in Ganga are maintained as per the water-sharing treaty with Bangladesh, a spokesperson explained. The crisis this year has erupted due to lack of rains that supplement the river levels.
