In Afghanistan, four soldiers were killed when militants made an assassination attempt on a provincial governor but he escaped unhurt. Governor of Wardak province Halim Fidai was traveling to inspect a school after meeting with elders in the Jagatu district yesterday when a roadside bomb explosion killed soldiers in his convoy.

The governor spokesman said today that two militants, including a local Taliban commander, were arrested as they tried to flee the scene. Taliban militants often target Afghan officials in a bid to derail public confidence in the government. Afghan government is planning to announce a reconciliation program for the militant groups next week but analysts doubt its success owing to growing strength of Taliban.

Meanwhile, militants have kidnapped a district police chief and two other officers in an early morning attack on a police patrol in eastern Afghanistan today. Provincial police chief said the patrol, which included Jamtullah Khan, the police chief of Shaigal district in Kunar province, bordering Pakistan, was attacked after midnight. An interior ministry spokesman said it is the first abduction of a police chief by militants.
