Wait & watch before roll back of stimulus packages: Pranab

Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee says the government would wait and watch the situation before deciding on rolling back the stimulus packages announced after India's economic growth slackened impacted by the global financial crisis. He was talking to reporters in Bangalore today. Mr. Mukherjee said the international view is that stimulus package should not be reversed till full recovery in Europe and North America was distinctly visible. On price rise, Mr. Mukherjee said even when wholesale price inflation is negative, it did not give any satisfaction to the common man, as the consumer price inflation is moving up. He said to prevent the adverse impact of rising prices, import of essential commodities, including sugar, edible oil and pulses is being encouraged where there is short supply. The Finance Minister said the Centre had also requested states to revamp the public distribution system to protect those below poverty line from the impact of price rise by providing subsidized food items.Mr. Mukherjee also said that efforts are being made to ensure that the austerity drive do not compromise on the security measures to protect individuals. Defending the austerity measures, he said steps like traveling by economy class might be a drop in the ocean but others like cut in non-Plan expenditure to the extent of 10 per cent could amount to huge savings for the government.
