Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu has said the urban transport is the key element of urban infrastructure and calls for urgent action. <br/><br/>Delivering the key note address at the Urban Mobility India Conference in Hyderabad today, the Vice President said, shifting to clean fuel, retiring old vehicles and use of electrical vehicles is the need of the hour for tackling environmental challenges. He asked the policy makers and experts of public transport to make room for the bicycle and pedestrian paths. <br/><br/>Mr Naidu said last mile connectivity is the most important factor for making high capacity public transport popular. He also said inter model integration will provide seem less connectivity for commuters. He said, this may include joint stations, joint fares, common mobility cards and combined public information activity. He said, there should be integration of land use and proper transport planning. The main objective of this integration is to reduce the need for travel and length of travel distance. <br/><br/>Union Housing and Urban Affairs minister Hardeep Singh Puri said, the physical manifestation of the smart cities programme will be seen by 2018 June. About 1000 delegates from 26 countries are taking part in the three day conference. The deliberations include presentations of public transport systems from 86 countries all over the world including 36 from India.
