Voting is in progress to elect the next Vice President of India. It is being held in Parliament House. It started at 10 a.m. and will end at 5 p.m. Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, UPA Chairperson, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi and Congress leader, Rahul Gandhi came together to cast their ballot. BJP leader, L.K.Advani and Sushma Swaraj were also exercise their franchise. Among the early voters are Congress MP, Priya Dutt and Abhishekh Manu Singhvi and Union Minister, R.P.N.Singh and V.Narayanswamy.
There are only two candidates in the fray. UPA candidate Mohd. Hamid Ansari is pitted against the NDA nominee Jaswant Singh. Counting of votes will be taken up this evening. The incumbent Vice President Mohd. Hamid Ansari completes his tenure on Friday.
A total of 788 Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs are eligible to vote in the poll to elect the 14th Vice President of India. The Vice-President is elected by the members of the Electoral College consisting of the members of both Houses of Parliament.
