In Nepal, voting will take place today to elect a new Prime Minister. The fate of Dr. Baburam Bhattarai of the UCPN (Maoist) and Ram Chandra Poudel of the Nepali Congress will be decided. Both the candidates have expressed the confidence that they will be able to form the government. This will be the fourth majority government since the election of the Constituent Assembly in 2008. The Maoist have 236 legislators in the Constituent Assembly with an effective strength of 594, while the Nepali Congress has 114 members. If the first round of voting remains indecisive, the second round will be held today itself. The Nepali Congress has claimed that all the parties except the Maoists will support their candidate, while the Maoist have claimed they will be able to form the government. As part of their step to garner support for their candidate, the remaining combatants who were providing security to the Maoist leaders were returned to the camp yesterday. The CPM-UML, the third largest party, with 105 members hinted at supporting the Nepali Congress after its Standing Committee meeting saying that if the Maoist does not show flexibility in the peace process, it will not be able to support their candidate. The Samyukta Madhesi Loktantrik Morcha however is undecided and is to meet again today to decide on who the alliance will support. While the Nepali Congress needs the CPN-UML Madhesi Morcha alongwith other fringe parties, the Maoist need only the Madhesi Morcha to get the majority to form the next government.
