Voting is underway in Egypt to elect new parliament

Voting is taking place in Egypt today to elect a new parliament in the country. The Chairman of High Elections Commission Sameh el-Kashef has said that voting is taking place peacefully in 222 main polling stations and 44 thousand and 500 others nationwide, under the supervision of 2 thousand and 286 judges. Candidates will be vying for 508 seats, including 64 seats designated for women. According to a statement of Egypt’s state information service, up to 6,000 members of 76 civil society organizations are observing the elections which is being covered by the Egyptian, Arab and foreign media. One information of violence has been reported so far and security forces are on high alert for peaceful conduct of the election. The ruling National Democratic Party (NDP), which has dominated parliament for more than three decades, is expected to gain considerable seats as opposition Muslim Brotherhood has fielded only 130 candidates after the election committee disqualified more than a dozen of them.
