Voting is underway in Egypt today to elect a new Parliament. According to Head of the Higher Election Commission El-Sayyed Abdel-Aziz Omar, four thousand six hundred and 86 candidates are contesting for the 508 seats in which 64 have been allocated to women. Security forces are on high alert after violent clashes erupted throughout the Nile Delta and in the south of the country. The ruling National Democratic Party (NDP), which has dominated parliament for more than three decades, is expected to gain considerable seats as opposition Muslim Brotherhood has fielded only 130 candidates after the election committee disqualified more than a dozen of them. The NDP and the Brotherhood have swapped accusations of intimidation and violence. Reports say, four people have already been killed and 30 wounded in election related violence so far.
