Voting in forthcoming Assembly polls to be held on basis of EPIC: EC

The Election Commission said on Monday that voting in the forthcoming Assembly elections will be held on the basis of Electoral Photo Identity Cards, EPIC and a close monitoring will be kept on expenditure of the candidates.

Talking to media-persons on Monday evening at Lucknow, Chief Election Commissioner Dr SY Quraishi and two other Election Commissioners V S Sampath and H S Brahma said that slips containing name of polling booth and serial number in voters list, will be provided to the voters by the poll personnel during forthcoming Assembly elections.

They said that it will be done first time in Uttar Pradesh. CEC Dr. Quraishi said that model code of conduct will be implemented strictly during poll campaign. He said that candidates will be allowed for putting banners but wall writing will not be allowed during campaigning. He said that the Election Commission, EC, has taken stringent steps to check the role of money and muscle power in the elections.

Replying to a question, he said, several political parties have lodged complaints against some senior most officials of the state government and has demanded their removal. He said the EC has taken their demands seriously but the EC's role begins after the announcement of elections. Expressing satisfaction over just concluded voters list revision drive, he said that total number of voters have increased to 12 crore, 48 lakh from 10 crore 84 lakh after the revision drive. He said it was more or less proportionate to the population of the state.

Earlier addressing a meeting of senior poll officers, the EC asked the officials to ensure hundred per cent distribution of EPIC and said that not a single eligible voter should be left. EC also said that bogus names in the voter’s lists will not be tolerated and that polling booths should not be far away.

Representatives of different political parties also met the full Commission on Monday morning at Raj Bhawan. Most of the political parties have raised issue of faulty voters lists and unavailability of Photo Identity Cards to voters. Parties of the state also raised objections over working of the state bureaucracy.

A delegation of BJP raised the issues of inclusion of bogus names and entries of same persons at many places in the voters list across the state. The Congress has demanded immediate ban on transfers of senior administrative and police officers. Party has demanded that all officers facing charges for their partial conduct during previous elections must not be put on election duties.
