In Tamil Nadu, polling for the first phase of local body elections began at 7 this morning. Ten Corporations including Chennai, Tiruchirapalli, Coimbatore, Madurai, 60 Municipalities including Thanjavur, Ariyalur, Perambalur, 259 town panchayats and 191 panchayat unions will go to polls today.The State Election Commission has made elaborate arrangements for the voters to exercise their franchise and for the first time, ninety two thousand, four hundred and fifty electronic voting machines will be used in urban areas in municipal corporations, municipalities and in town panchayats this time.Thirty eight observers throughout the state will monitor poll related activities. More than six lakh government employees are deployed for election duty.A total of 12,106 booths have been identified as sensitive. In chennai, voters exercise their franchise under the watchful eyes of the video and web cameras. Special arrangements have been made for the differently abled and senior citizens. Tight security has been made all over the state. More than eighty thousand police personnel and five companies of Para military force are on vigil to prevent any untoward incidents.
