Voters head to polls for UK general election

With Conservatives and Labour locked in a battle, millions of people across Britain have started casting their votes in the general election. Polling stations across the country opened at 0700 am local time and people will be able to cast their ballots until 10 pm local time. More than 44 million people are registered to vote. The first results are expected at 2300 hrs BST. Voters will also elect councillors in 164 local authorities across England. Voting in the general election will take place in 649 constituencies, with nearly 4,150 candidates contesting the polls. The vast majority of constituencies will conduct their counts overnight. Exit polls will be broadcast on television immediately after voting ends at 10pm.

Last night's opinion polls have predicted a hung parliament with Conservative emerging as the largest single party.
