Hundreds of Guatemalans are in shelters after a powerful eruption at the southern Pacaya volcano killed two people, left three missing and thousands homeless.

Ash blanketed the region on Friday as rocks and lava spewed for about four hours from the volcano, 50 kilometres south of the capital, injuring dozens of people, including one critically. It also forced the international airport to close. The volcano was rocked by constant explosions and spewed incandescent material.

The head of the National Seismological Institute warned another eruption could take place in the coming days at the most active volcano in Central America. The Pacaya volcano has been active for 49 years but only experienced six large eruptions.

In 1987, a similar eruption occurred and was followed by more violent activity five days later. There are 288 volcanoes in Guatemala, eight of which are active.
