In the United States,44 people have been killed as tornadoes kicked up by powerful storms have ripped across six south-eastern states. Rescue workers searched for survivors amid fears that the death toll could rise. The storm, which first hit on Thursday, has made its way through Oklahoma, Arkansas, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and North Carolina. A state of emergency was declared in North Carolina and also in Alabanma.
