Violent rainstorm kills 30 in Portugal

Officials in the Portuguese Island of Madeira say more than 30 people have been killed in floods and mudslides caused by a violent rainstorm. The airport on the island has been closed and people have been advised to remain indoors. Strong winds, high seas and blocked roads have hampered the rescue efforts.Torrential rain and high winds have wreaked havoc on Madeira and landslides have killed a number of people. Video images from the island, popular with tourists show torrents of water raging through the streets and smashing the flood barriers. Trees have been brought down and bridges and roads have been washed away. One woman was killed when the roof of a house caved in.
