Violence no solution to any problem: Sonia

UPA Chairperson and Congress President Sonia Gandhi has said, violence has never provided enduring solution. Addressing a public meeting this afternoon at Kangla, the historical palace of Manipur, Gandhi said, dialogue is the only way forward to solve problems.AIR Imphal Correspondent ARIBAM IBOMCHA SHARMA reports that the Congress President said, she fully knows the hardships faced by the people of Manipur in the prevailing situation of the state. She said, the people of the state must work together to bring peace so that development activities could accelerate at a faster pace. She added that the problems of the state can only be properly addressed by dialogue.The UPA Chairperson also announced that the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation has agreed to sanction a sum of 72 crore rupees for construction of three new market sheds in Imphal. Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh, Union Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation Minister, Kumari Selja, Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee President Gaikhangam and state Power Minister Phungjathang Tonsing also attended the meeting among others. This morning, Mrs. Gandhi inaugurated the much awaited Khuga Multipurpose Project in Churachandpur District of the state. The project has been under construction for the last 27 years. The Project will give three component facilities – irrigation, water supply and electricity. In the afternoon, Mrs. Gandhi also paid floral tribute to Saheed Minar at the Bir Tikendrajit Park in Imphal. Later, she also inaugurated three newly constructed Women Market Sheds, one Tribal Market Complex and Muslim Girls’ Hostel in Imphal. She also laid foundation stone for the construction of the Manipur Campus of the Indira Gandhi National Tribal University at Makhan Village and INA Memorial Complex at Moirang.Meanwhile, 17 civil organizations of Manipur have called today 15 hours general strike in the state in protest against Central Government’s remaining silent on the whereabouts of R.K. Meghen, Chairman of the proscribed United National Liberation Front (UNLF) of Manipur after media reports of his arrest at Dhaka in the last week of September last. Passenger vehicles did not ply in and around Imphal due to the general strike, educational institutions, shops and other business establishments also remained closed during the day. However, there is no report of untoward incident during the strike and people came out in large number to attend the public meeting at Kangla.
