In Tamil Nadu, the Election Commission has issued show cause notices to AIADMK supremo and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and DMK President M Karunanidhi for violating model code. <br/><br/>The two notices issued last night say that prima facie the manifestos of the two parties have not substantially fulfilled the guidelines of the Commission. <br/><br/>The poll panel gave them time till 5PM today to explain their stand for non-compliance of the guidelines. The notice also asked to reflect the rationale for the promises made in manifesto and broadly indicate the ways and means to meet the financial requirement for same. <br/><br/>Meanwhile, the poll body has postponed the polling for the Aravakurichi constituency in Karur district. Election in the constituency will now be held on 23rd May and counting on the 25th. <br/><br/>The step was taken on complaints of rampant distribution of money and significant seizure of cash and materials during the campaign period.<br/><br/>AIR correspondent reports, social activists for long have been crying foul over the atmosphere created in Aravakurichi constituency due to money power in the election fray. <br/><br/>Election Commission teams' tight vigil led to heavy seizure of money in the constituency during the early stages of the campaigning itself. <br/><br/>The deferment is considered necessary to cool off the effects of money power from the minds of gullible voters in the constituency. <br/><br/>Furthermore, the freebies culture in the state often comes under severe attacks from political commentators and social activists. <br/><br/>Waiver of huge loans, free cell phones, free power up to a ceiling and subsidy to buy scooters are some of the promises that galore in the manifestos of the AIADMK and the DMK, who have been issued notices. Both the actions of the ECI are viewed an attempt to clean up the system.
