The Andhra Pradesh government suspended Vijayawada Police Commissioner K V Rajendranath Reddy on Monday holding him responsible for the dramatic escape of Vijayawada MP L Rajagopal from government hospital on Sunday, late night. After an emergency meeting with some of his Cabinet colleagues in Hyderabad, Chief Minister K Rosaiah said, the failure and irresponsibility of police was glaring in Rajagopal’s escape. There is a suspicion whether the police connived with him. Mr. Rosaiah said, an inquiry has been ordered into the whole issue. Five more police officials have also been suspended on the basis of the report submitted by the Vijayawada Police Commissioner.

Rajagopal, who had been observing an indefinite fast for the past nine days in protest against the proposed bifurcation of the state, had escaped from the government hospital in Vijayawada around 10:30 pm on Sunday night. He called upon people and political parties to observe restraint and maintain law and order. Stating that the problems can be resolved through talks, he said that the solution for the present political crisis was not in the state purview. He said the continuous agitations are leading to administrative inaction and paralysing common life.

Meanwhile, the protest demonstrations continued even on Monday in Rayalaseema and Coastal Andhra Regions in favour of Unified State. Commuters and common people faced severe inconvenience due to bandh observed in several districts including Visakhapatnam, Kadapa, Chitoor, Prakasam, Guntur and Krishna. Traffic on National highways has come to a stand still at several places due to road blockades erected by the agitators. Public and Private property was damaged at several places in these regions.
