Victory Parade to mark triumph of Lankan security forces over LTTE to be held tomorrow

A tri-services victory parade to mark the triumph of the Sri Lankan security forces over the LTTE in May last year will be held in Colombo tomorrow.The parade will be commanded by Major General Kamal Gunaratne, the senior most serving officer, who commanded the fighting formations during the Vanni battle against the LTTE.Major General Gunaratne commanded the 53 Division of the Sri Lankan Army, which fought its way from Jaffna and joined the final battle on the banks of the Nanthikadal lagoon in which the LTTE leader Prabhakaran was finally killed.Military spokesman Major General Prasad Samarasinghe said that about 9,000 security forces, police and Civil Defence Force personnel would take part in the parade, which would be held annually to celebrate the victory and to remember those who had laid down their lives for their motherland. According to him, the parade would depict their victories pf the security forces in the eastern and Vanni theatres.The National War Heroes commemoration ceremony will be held later at the Parliamentary ground. The service commanders and more than 3000 ranaviru families will participate in the commemoration ceremony.Sri Lanka has declared a public holiday tomorrow in view of the Victory celebrations.The victory parade which was earlier scheduled for 20th May had to be postponed due to inclement weather conditions prevailing in the island nation.
