Victorian government announces on-the-spot fine for carrying knives

In Australia, Victorian government today announced 1000 dollar on-the-spot fine for people caught carrying knives. It also gave more powers to police to conduct random weapon searches in Victoria that saw a spate of attacks on Indians. Under the three-point plan, minors will be banned from buying prohibited or controlled weapons. Quoting Victorian Premier John Brumby, media reports say that carrying a knife on licensed premises like bars and pubs will bring a 2000 dollars on-the-spot fine. The measures have been taken by the government, following facing strong criticism over law and order situation in the state, particularly in the wake of several attacks on Indian students.
