Vice president Hamid Ansari will wrap up his five-day tour to Rwanda and Uganda, today, by paying a floral tribute to the bust of Father of nation Mahatma Gandhi at the source of Nile in Jinja, a town around 80 Km away from Kampala. He will also attend a meeting of Indian diaspora in the capital city Kampala on the latter half of the day.

The statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the source of the Nile was an idea of the Indian community in Uganda in collaboration with the Indian government. It was unveiled on 5 October, 1997 by Inder Kumar Gujral, the then Prime Minister of India. It has since been maintained by Bank of Baroda.

Gandhi Ji's ashes was also sprinkled in the Nile because it was his wish, that on death, some of his ashes be sprinkled in the Nile. This monument stands not only as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi's unforgettable work in Africa, but also as a source of reminder of Gandhian philosophy of peace and harmony.

No doubt the ashes sprinkled in Nile in Jinja have been washed all over the continent but the Gandhi monument has become a source of peace, pilgrimage and tourist site for Ugandan and Indian nationals.
