Vice-President is also attending a meeting of Indian diaspora in the capital city Kampala as the concluding event of his tour to Uganda.

The statue of Mahatma Gandhi at the source of the river Nile was an idea of the Indian community in Uganda in collaboration with the Indian government. It was unveiled on 5 October, 1997 by Inder Kumar Gujral, the then Prime Minister of India. It has since been maintained by Bank of Baroda. Gandhi Ji's ashes were also immersed in the river Nile in 1948 according to his wish.

This monument stands not only as a tribute to Mahatma Gandhi's unforgettable work in Africa, but also as a source of reminder of Gandhian philosophy of peace and harmony. It is also a source of peace, pilgrimage and tourist site for Ugandan and Indian nationals.
