Vice President Hamid Ansari returns home after NAM summit

Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari returned home last night after attending the NAM Summit. The 17th summit of the Non Aligned Nations in the Margarita Island of Venezuela was also attended by India's Permanent Representative to the UN Syed Akbaruddin and Minister of State for External Affairs M J Akbar at the delegation and Ministerial level conferences of the summit. The theme of the summit for the next three years would be Peace, sovereignty and solidarity for the development.

Talking to media on board while returning Vice President said India emphatically made the point of sustainable development and that it is not possible unless there is peace in the society. He said India raised the point of terrorism in the convention and it was well understood by all the nations and it also found large space in the draft declaration of the summit.
Expressing grief on the killing of Army jawans in Uri he condemned the attack in strong terms.

Answering a question whether India's restraint is tested, he said we shall respond in our own judgement and there is no question of restraint or tolerance. He said no body can tolerate terrorism.

On Pakistan's attempt to once again internationalise the Kashmir issue in the summit, Mr. Ansari said it is contrary to the practice of NAM and objectionable to India. He said since NAM does not have a practice of reply therefore India registered its protest in a formal communication which MoS external affairs M J Akbar made.

On the sidelines of the summit the Vice President also held bilateral meetings with the Venezuela President Nicolas Moduro, President of Iran Hassan Rouhani and leaders of Nepal and Cuba.
Earlier, in the draft declaration member states committed to revitalizing the movement and urging the United Nations to reform towards a better inclusion of their countries in the Security Council which was one of India's main agendas in the summit.

Among the 21 points the document outlined, the member states committed to building more solidarity and launching new alliances and to work on promoting peace, eradicating poverty and addressing climate change on the world stage.
