Vice President Hamid Ansari returns home

The Vice President Mohammed Hamid Ansari has expressed satisfaction over the outcome of Asia- Europe Summit that concluded in Brussels on Tuesday. Speaking to media persons on board the special aircraft on his return to New Delhi, Mr Ansari said, the declaration put out at the end of the Summit largely reflected the views India held mainly a strong call for reform of the International Monetary Fund. Mr Ansari noted that there is a great deal of agreement amongst the participating countries at the Summit that there should be greater cooperation in combating terrorism. Mr Ansari had cautioned the western world against using non-traditional protectionist measures as part of stimulus to revive their economies. Addressing the Summit on Tuesday, he said, the fact that some of these measures are focused on services and manufacturing sectors where developing economies tend to have a comparative advantage adds to the problem. On the sidelines of the ASEM, Mr Ansari also got an opportunity to interact with the leaders of the European Union, Greece, Latvia, Finland, Belgium and Prime Minister Najib Tun Razzak of Malaysia. He also held discussions with European Council President Herman Von Rompuy and Belgian Prime Minister Yves Leterme. Mr Ansari's discussions with the European leaders assume significance as Prime Minister Manmohan Singh is scheduled to visit Brussels in December for the India-EU Summit. Vice President's participation in ASEM summit gave India an opportunity to plug into the developments taking place globally in tackling the crises. Mr Ansari also discussed the issue of a free trade agreement between India and EU during his meeting with European Council President Herman von Rompuy. India and the European Union hope to conclude the free trade agreement well in time for their summit meeting scheduled to be held in Brussels in December, as the two sides believe the India-Europe FTA could help put the commercial ties between the two continents on a faster track. Mr Ansari who returned to New Delhi Wednesday morning said the declaration put out at the end of the two day ASEM Summit largely reflected the views India held. He said the bilateral discussions with the Presidents of the European Union and the European Commission were substantive and fruitful. With the Prime Minister scheduled to visit Brussels later this year end to take part in the India-EU Summit, some issues of concern to India which he raised with them evoked, what he termed as not negative. He said there is also growing understanding amongst the nations that there should be greater cooperation in combating terrorism. Mr Ansari said he is aware that some people buy their way into the Rajya Sabha, and added that corrective measures have to be taken by building consensus within the political system. Replying to a question, he said the Election Commission is veering around the view that the amount involved in paid news should be added to the electoral expenditure of the candidate.
