Vice President favours global legal regime against terrorism

Vice President Hamid Ansari has made a strong pitch for an international legal regime against terrorism, saying the menace knows no boundaries and seriously threatens global peace and security. Addressing a banquet hosted by President of the Senate of the Parliament of Czech Republic last night, he said, the recent incidents of terrorism in India and other countries serve as a grim reminder that the scourge of terrorism is severely affecting the civilised life. Mr Ansari said, the international community must continue and reinvigorate its collective efforts to strengthen global cooperation to eradicate terrorism in all its forms and manifestations. He said, swift and credible steps must be taken to eliminate terrorist safe havens. The Vice President added that there is an urgent need to strengthen the global consensus and the legal regime against terrorism, including early adoption of the long overdue Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism at the United Nations. On the bilateral relations, Mr Ansari said, there is an ideal synergy between India's growing market and Czech technology adding that both the countries already have bilateral trade and investment in sectors as diverse as software, pharmaceuticals, infrastructure, textiles and engineering goods. During the address, the Vice-President also remembered the decades old relations between India and Czech, mentioning the visit of Rabindranath Tagore twice to Prague in 1920s at the invitation of his friend and celebrated Czech Indologist Professor Lesny and the visit of Jawaharlal Nehru in 1938 accompanied by his daughter Indira.<br/>On the third day of the Czech Republic visit, the Vice President Mr. Mohammad Hamid Ansari is going to meet the Prime Minister Mr. Jan Fishcer and former President Mr. Vaclav Havel today. He would be given a civic reception at the Town Hall by Lord Mayor of Prague Mr. Pavel Bem. After visiting the Historic Old Town Square, Mr. Ansari would go to the Senate of the Czech Republic and witness the signing of three agreements. These include one relating to economic co-operation, social security and a protocol on amending the bilateral investment promotion agreement with the Czech Republic.<br/>
