Veteran Kannada Poet, and Former-vice chancellor of Hampi Kannada University Dr. Chandrashekhara Kambar has been selected for the 2010 Jnanpeeth award. The country's highest literary honour instituted in 1961 carries a cheque for Rs.7.5lakh, a citation and a bronze replica of Vagdevi. This Jnanpeeth is being given to him in recognition of his literary achievement. Born in 1937, Kambar former Vice Chancellor of Kannada University in Hampi was a recipient of Padmashri, Kabir Samman, Kalidas Samman and Pampa Award. Dr.Kambar popularized the North Karnataka dialect through his poems and plays.
Kambar has become the eighth Kannadiga to have won the award. Among those from Karnataka, who have bagged the award include Kuvempu, Da.Ra.Bendre, Shivaram Karanth, Masti Venkatesh Iyengar, V.K.Gokak, Girish Karnad and U.R.Ananth Murthy.
