Veteran Congress leader Arjun Singh dies

Veteran Congress leader and former Union Minister Arjun Singh is dead. He was 81. Ailing for some time he was admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences in New Delhi and complained of breathing problem around 5.30 PM. He breathed his last this evening.Arjun Singh had served in various capacities including as Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister. A loyalist of the Gandhi family, Singh was Vice President of the Congress under Rajiv Gandhi in the eighties and was also Governor of Punjab at the height of militancy and was instrumental in the Rajiv-Longowal accord. The president Mrs. Pratibha Devisingh Patil has condoled the death of the Veteran Congress Leader Arjun Singh. In her condolence message, the President said that the Arjun Singh was an experienced personality. The important responsibilities given to him, during his carrier shows the acumen and ability he possessed. Mrs. Patil said that in his passing away the nation has lost a good leader.Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee has condoled the death of veteran leader and former Union Minister Arjun Singh who passed away in New Delhi today. In her condolence message,she said that Arjun Singh who held various important portfolios during his long political career, was deeply committed to the welfare of the marginalized sections of the society. She added that with the passing away of Arjun Singh, the nation has lost a great leader who worked tirelessly for the underprivileged section of the society. Congress President Sonia Gandhi has condoled the death of veteran Congress leader, Arjun Singh. In her condolence message, she has expressed sympathies with the bereaved family and recalled his contribution to the development of Congress Party and nation.Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit has also condoled the death. In Madhya Pradesh, chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has announced a three day state mourning in the state and a public holiday tomorrow in respect of former chief minister Arjun Singh, who died this evening. Chouhan said that Arjun Singh was an able administrator. He did tremendous work for weaker sections. State Congress president Suresh Pachori said that death of Arjun Singh is an un-repairable loss. He said Arjun Singh will always be remembered as a messiah of weaker sections.
