‘Veteran actor Shammi Kapoor passes away

Hindi Cinema's flamboyant and versatile actor Shammi Kapoor, who held sway over Cinegoers with his scintillating performances in 'Junglee' and 'Kashmir Ki Kali', died in Mumbai this morning. He was 79.Shammi Kapoor was admitted to Breach Candy hospital last week and was on ventilator support. He died of chronic renal failure. Bollywood thespian Amitabh Bachchan was the first to break the news of his death on twitter early today. Describing Mr Kapoor as full of optimism and happy spirit, Mr Bachchan said with his death, zest for life of the industry is lost. Various other actors also expressed deep shock at the demise of Mr Shammi Kapoor.The actor, who made his debut in 1953 film 'Jeevan Jyoti' went on to become Hindi Cinema's top actor and mesmerised the audiences for more than 35 years in over 100 films.The funeral will be held in Mumbai tomorrow.Shammi Kapoor won the Filmfare Best Actor Award in 1968 for his performance in 'Brahmachari'.Condoling the death of veteran actor Shammi Kapoor, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan said the industry has lost an iconic figure. Union Minister for Science and Technology Vilasrao Deshmukh said, Shammi Kapoor's death is a big loss to the film fraternity. Union Power Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said, today was a sad day for Bollywood. Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni has condoled the death of noted film personality Shammi Kapoor. In her condolence message, Mrs. Soni described him a legend and said he himself found a very special niche in the Mumbai Film Industry. She said, Shammi Kapur had performed diverse roles and Mumbai Film Industry is going to be poorer without him.
