In West Bengal, very severe cyclone Yaas heavily impacted the coastal areas of East Medinipur and South 24 Parganas.<br />'' <br />''Heavy rainfall started along with squall wind speed of 70-80 kmph as Yaas started its landfall around 9.30 this morning.<br />'' <br />''River embankments have been damaged, high tidal waves have been witnessed and rivers are flooding low lying areas due to its impact.<br />'' <br />''AIR Correspondent reports, extremely high tidal waves and stormy wind lashed the coastal areas of East Medinipur as Yaas touched the land in the adjacent state.<br />'' <br />''Low lying areas were flooded and about 70 kilometers of river embankment have been damaged while 51 embankments have been broken in the district so far.<br />'' <br />''Army has been pressed into action to rescue people stranded at Digha.<br />'' <br />''In South 24 Parganas, rivers are flooding the villages of Sunderbans as river embankments have been damaged at 15 places including Sagar, Namkhana, Frasergunje and Basanti.<br />'' <br />''Nearly 20 thousand kuccha houses have been damaged and areas are inundated. Uprooting of trees and electric poles are already creating trouble.<br />'' <br />''Disaster management teams including NDRF, SDRF and Army personnel are working on a war footing.<br />'' <br />''Over 15 lakh people have been evacuated and placed in flood and cyclone shelters.<br />'' <br />''<span style="color: #222222;">However, Kolkata was not affected by Yaas except uprooting of trees at several places.</span><br />
