Verdict on Ruchika molestation case today

The verdict in the 20-year old molestation case of Ruchika Girhotra for enhancing the jail term of former Haryana DGP SPS Rathore is expected today in a Chandigarh court. Rathore has already been convicted to six months in jail for molesting Ruchika. The court was initially scheduled to give its verdict on 8th of February, but the case was put off after Rathore was stabbed by a student as he came out of court. Rathore has appealed against the conviction by the CBI trial court saying he is not guilty. The CBI and Ruchika's family have sought enhanced sentence for Rathore. CBI wants Rathore jailed for two years while her family wants life sentence for him for abetting Ruchika's suicide.
Rathore molested Ruchika, a budding tennis player, on August 12, 1990 and she later committed suicide in 1993, after Rathore allegedly used his position in the police force to scuttle all enquiries against him. It was only after the Punjab and Haryana High Court intervened in 1998 that a CBI inquiry was ordered. On December 21, 2009, the CBI trial court finally convicted Rathore, but sentenced him to just six months in prison which left Ruchika's family deeply disappointed.
