Venus Williams, Rafael Nadal bow out in opening round of Australian Open

Fifth seed Rafael Nadal and Eighth seed Venus Williams bowed out of Australian Open tennis today. Venus tried to rally, winning two games and getting another break-point chance after falling a set and 5-0 behind, before her 16th trip to the Australian Open finished in a first-round loss to Johanna Konta.The 35-year-old went down in a surprising 6-4, 6-2 loss to the No. 47-ranked Konta, a Sydney-born British player who was making her debut in the main draw. It was the eighth time Venus has lost in the first round of a Grand Slam tournament and the third in Australia. In Men's Singles, Rafael Nadal was knocked out in first round. He lost to Fernando Verdasco in five sets.Andy Murray and Garbine Muguruza raced into the Australian Open second round today. Murray doused the challenge of exciting German prospect Alexander Zverev 6-1, 6-2, 6-3 to get his campaign underway. In Women's Singles, Muguruza wasted little time as she beat Estonian debutante Anett Kontaveit 6-0, 6-4.
