Venugopal, Aamir, Rahman, Rekha & Sahwag among Padma Awardees

Ebarhim Alkazi, Zohra Sehgal, Nobel laureate Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, Apollo hospital chief Dr.Prathap Chandra Reddy, former RBI Governor Y Venugopal Reddy and Umayalpuram K Sivaraman have been selected for this years second highest civilian award Padma Vibhushan.<br/><br/>Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan and film music maestros A R Rahman are among the 43 personalities selected for the Padma Bhushan. Other prominent people who have been selected for this honour include Ilaiyaaraa Raja and noted cadiac surgeon Dr Ramakant Panda, Mallika Sarabhai, Dr Bipin Chandra, B K Chaturvedi, Fareed Zakaria, Moosa Raza, Prof Abhijit Sen, and Dr Kushal Pal Singh. The awards were announced this evening.<br/><br/>81 people will be conferred the Padam Shree. Veteran Film actress Rekha, filmstar Saif Ali Khan, cricketer Virendra Sehwag, Badminton star Saina Nehwal, hockey national Ignace Tirkey, Narayan Karthikeyan, and Sachin Tendulkar's guru Ramakant Achrekar are among the prominent personalities in the list.<br/><br/>Other important names in the list include Prof Hamidi Kashmiri, Dr Jitendra Udhampuri, Dr K K Agarwal, Sudha Kaul and Venu Srinivasan.<br/><br/>The Padam Awards were announced this evening. All together 130 personalities have been selected for the awards in 3 catagories. However no name has been selected for the highest civilian honour of Bharat Ratna.<br/><br/>Reacting after being selected for the Padma Bhushan in art category, noted danseuse and social worker, Mallika Sarabhai speaking to AIR from Davos in Switzerland, expressed happiness. She said this award is for those people who are fighting for justice and human rights.<br/><br/>Former cabinet secretary, Mr B K Chaturvedi said this recognition will give him impetus to work more for the country.
