In Venezuela, prosecutors have charged two former prison governors and a soldier with corruption, following riots in June that killed 22 people at the El Rodeo jail. The Prison Governors have also been charged with facilitating the trafficking of arms and drugs and associating with criminals. The riots at the jail, outside Caracas, had begun after a fight between rival inmate gangs of prisoners. National Guards were then sent to search the jail for drugs and guns. But one group of heavily armed prisoners refused to surrender, leading to a stand-off which continued for almost a month.China's first aircraft carrier begins first sea trial China's first aircraft carrier steamed out of Dalian harbor for a sea trial today. The short voyage by the refitted Ukrainian carrier ends weeks of speculation about the date of the vessel's initial sea trial. A defence Ministry statement said the carrier, formerly known as the Varyag, will soon return to harbor for continued refit and test work.Chinese officials have downplayed the significance of the carrier, saying it will be used for scientific research, experiments and training. But the ship has become a symbol of China's rising military power at a time of tension with several of its neighbors over competing maritime claims in the East and South China seas. They say the new vessel could be deployed as part of a battle group to project Chinese power in disputed areas including the South China Sea.
