Police in Venezuela used water cannons and rubber bullets to break up a protest against the law that increases Government's control over Universities. Dozens of police and national guards troops blocked the march by hundreds of students outside the central universities in Caracas. The student protesters say, the new law will be used social ideology inside the universities which has been a focus of opposition for President Hugo Chavez. The higher education law is the latest in a series of measures rushed through the country's National Assembly before a new Parliament with many more Opposition members due to be sworn in next month. In recent days, it has approved tighter State control over the media, Internet and banks and given President Hugo Chavez power to rule by decree for 18 months.
