Residents of the capital, Caracas, blocked streets with broken concrete and twisted metal and flaming piles of trash. <br/><br/>Opposition leaders called the planned constitutional assembly a ploy to keep Maduro and his allies in power by putting off regional elections this year and a Presidential election next year. The President's opponents want to hold a vote to remove him, blaming the left-wing President for food shortages that have led to rioting. <br/><br/>Maduro has rejected their calls and issued a presidential decree creating a 500-member "constituent assembly" to rewrite the constitution. The step would bypass the opposition-controlled Congress. Meanwhile, US has warned that it might impose more sanctions on Venezuelan officials over Maduro's push to rewrite the constitution.
