Varanasi blast due state intelligence failure: Chidambaram; Mayawati announces compensation

Union Home Minister, Mr. P. Chidambaram has said that the blast was the failure of the State Government security agencies as the Centre has given a specific advisory two times to the States about Varanasi terror strike. After visiting blast site and meeting with injured in hospitals in Varanasi he has expressed hope that the State security forces would be capable to book the culprits of the blast. He alleged despite repeated alerts state government failed to act in time. Talking to media persons he said, 31 persons are admitted in different hospitals and he would discuss with the state government about their best treatment. Mr. Chidambaram said that the Centre is ready to provide all types of help to the State about investigation of the blast and the treatment of the injured.AIR Lucknow correspondent reports the state government has announced financial assistance of one lakh rupees to the parents of girl chilled killed in Varanasi bomb blast. Talking to media persons at Lucknow state cabinet secretary Shashank Shekhar Singh said 50 thousand rupees each would be given to injured. The Cabinet Secretary said holding state responsible for blast is not justified as centre cannot pass the blame on the state when it had no actionable inputs to offer. He accepted an alert was received on February 25 this year, but that was up to Dusshera festival only. The cabinet secretary claimed that there was no laxity on the part of the local police. Accusing the Centre of lacking willpower required to tackle terrorism, the cabinet secretary said that Chief Minister Mayawati has written a letter to Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh demanding adequate security at important religious and tourist places in the state. He said the Chief Minister has requested the Prime Minister to provide 125 companies of central forces so that a lasting arrangement could be made for security. Meanwhile a team of forensic experts from Agra began collecting and testing samples at the blast site while top intelligence officials from Lucknow and New Delhi, besides higher ups of Mumbai Police have joined investigators. Local Police has said there is no breakthrough in the case as the probe is still in initial stages and piecing of whatever evidence is available is going on to arrives at any logical conclusion. A team of National Investigation Agency also reached at Varanasi. State government has released a list of 37 injured of them 26 are still being treated at different hospitals. BJP observed Varanasi Bandh, which evoked significant response in all areas of the town.
