Vaishno Devi footfalls on record high

Pilgrimage to holy cave shrine of Shri Mata Vaishno Devi ji created a new history on Saturday by surpassing eight million mark for the first time. With six days to go for the year and winter vacations rush on, the yatra this year was expected to touch 82 lakh."Yatra to Mata Vaishno Devi has touched 80 lakh on Saturday, a new milestone in history of the holy cave shrine. It was 12.5 lakh more than previous year’s total yatra and 5.83 lakh above the highest ever pilgrimage of 74.17 lakh recorded in 2007", Additional CEO, Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB), Dr Mandeep K Bhandari told.Official sources said arrival of 80 lakh pilgrims to Mata Vaishno Devi shrine, located between Trikuta hills, is a rare feat. Next target now would be to reach 10 million mark (100 lakh). Going by the increase in number of yatris almost every year, it wouldn’t be an impossible task to touch the figure of 10 million, they added. With winter vacations in most parts of the country, pilgrimage to the cave shrine has picked up from average 10,000 a day in early part of this month to 25,000 at present. Total yatra this year could stay around 82 lakh.In the month of December till Saturday evening, 3.34 lakh pilgrims had paid obeisance to Goddess Vaishno Devi while number for corresponding days last year was 2.80 lakh.<br/>
