V Prez emphasizes upon quality, credible & accurate data collection for formulation of policies

Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari today emphasized on the need for quality, credible and accurate data collection for better formulation of polices and schemes in the country. Addressing an international conference on social statistics at Patna today Mr. Ansari said that all is not well in the Indian Social Statistics Sector. He said concerns have been raised about the quality of data being generated and duplication of efforts to collect statistics across various government departments. The Vice President said that the challenge is of getting credible and complete data and in good time.<br/><br/>Mr. Ansari said that in view of deregulation, liberalization and competition the structure of the economy is changing. He said those indices that reveal the underlying mechanism of our society and economy needs to be further refined and updated so that they provide relevant and timely information to the policymakers.<br/><br/>Harking upon authenticity of data Mr. Ansari said false data or its wrong interpretation can result in market volatility which can have a cascading effect on the economy. <br/><br/>The Vice President also underlined the importance of large scale data collection exercise like Census of India and National Health Survey which opens avenues of different information on population, demography and health related statistics. Mr. Ansari also reminded pioneer role of National Sample Survey Organization (NSSO) which provides data related to social and economic developments, industrial production and the agriculture sector which has great significance.<br/><br/>Governor of Bihar Ram Nath Kovind stressed that social statistics must be evolved in such a way that it may contribute in the field of education and health.
