Uttarakhand government has recommended a CBI inquiry into the death of Swami Nigamanand. Sami died recently after fasting for about four months demanding that Ganga be freed of quarrying activities in the Kumbh Mela region of Haridwar. There are widespread allegations that Nigmanand was poisoned at the behest of quarrying mafia. Meanwhile, Haridwar District Administration has given the permission for conduct of Samadhi proceedings for the late saint. Three days after the death of Matri Sadan saint Swami Nigamanand, a tussle has erupted between the Ashram inmates and the deceased saint’s family members over his last rites. While Matra Sadan Ashramites favour burial for Nigamanand, reasoning that his last rites should be held as per tradition followed for a ‘Sadhu’, his family members are demanding that he should be cremated as per Hindu rites. However, Haridwar District Magistrate R. Meenakshi Sundaram has directed for conduct of Samadhi proceedings. Meanwhile after much of hue and cry over Swami Nigmanand’s death raised by opposition Congress, Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank has decided to hand over the inquiry related to the death of Swami Nigamanand to CBI.
