US, World Bank Sign Agreement on Safety, Security of Water

The United States and World Bank have signed an agreement with the goal of ensuring the safety and security of the world's water supplies. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and World Bank President Robert Zoellick yesterday signed the memorandum of understanding in Washington as part of World Water Day. US and World Bank officials pledged to work to promote access to safe, hygienic drinking water, rehabilitate wetlands and improve irrigation practices. Mrs. Clinton said more than five thousand people, most of them children; die every day because of dirty water and sanitation problems. She said over the past year, a number of countries have benefited from US investment in clean water technology including Haiti, Indonesia, Jordan, Kenya, Cambodia, and the Philippines.
