The United States government has decided to provide Bangladesh 51.3 million US Dollars in food assistance for this fiscal year. The aid which is being provided through the US Department of Agriculture will be implemented under the Food for Progress programme and McGovern-Dole International Food for Education and Child Nutrition programs. The Food for Progress programme will provide benefits to 424,800 people while 350,000 children will benefit from the McGovern-Dole nutrition programme. According to U.S. Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack these two international food assistance programs support global food security and sustainable agriculture production in food-insecure nations. He also added that the US government’s efforts to support global food security are not just important to the many people around the world who do not have access to nutritious and safe food but they are also critically important to the sustainable economic growth of these nations, and the economic prosperity and national security of the United States.
