US stocks rose yesterday, as technology stocks traded higher for the second day in a row. Consumer companies gained steam as cruise lines rose. And the beleaguered financial industry recovered some of its losses from earlier this year. The Dow Jones industrial average gained 84 points, or 0.5 percent, to 17,717. The Standard & Poor's 500 index climbed 9 points, or 0.4 percent, to 2,064. And the Nasdaq Composite index rose 23 points, or 0.5 percent, to 4,869.
