According to the latest media report, the US is sending heavily armoured M1 Abrams main battle tanks to Afghanistan to step-up attacks on insurgents. As per the report, the sophisticated tanks will be fielded by the Marines in Afghanistan. The report adds, this will allow ground forces to target insurgents from a greater distance and with more of a lethal punch than is possible from any other US military vehicle.UN welcomes UN resolution on Human Rights violations in Iran The United States today welcomed the passage of a UN resolution on Human Rights violations in Iran. Spokesperson of National Security Council Mike Hammer said in a statement that by adopting the resolution, the international community has sent an unequivocal message to the Iranian government that universal rights must be respected. He said the United States stands with all who seek to exercise those rights.Earlier in the day, the Third Committee of the UN General Assembly that handles human rights issues passed a resolution on the human rights situation in Iran, by a vote of 80 in favour to 44 against, with 57 abstentions. India abstained on the resolution.
